What it says on the tin.
I haven't done RvR in this game in 20 years. At the moment, I play as a Cabalist and my aim is to get some RR points.
My plan (such as it is) is to go with some zergs in the BG and hit people with debuff spam, and toss a simulacrum into the fray when I can. I'm not trying to be the best, but I don't want to JUST get killed all the time for no reason. I do actually want the RRs!
So my basic question is: What do I need to know/buy to not suck? I notice a lot of potion use in groups, and have no idea where to get them. Any great macros/items/absolute noob stuff that you wish you'd known going in?
Any good tips /links to guides, are welcome.
I want to get in there, and get a few assists on my way to 50 so I have some RR for raids and assorted endgame fun. I haven't picked up crafting.
(I don't even know this is how it all works, I'm using terms from different games, here)

Not cabalist player here...but for zerg surfing you will probably profit more rps going matter/body and spamming aoe dot+disease...
To benefit from body debuff you need more casters assisting and its hard when playing in pug grps on zerg...

use /recorder and read the documentation.
Then use it to build better smarter buttons. For example you can bind quickcast and root to the same button to save time, or combine debuffs into one ability as long as they dont share a timer.
For 20 years away you also need to spend some time learning about the /use items, and how to use them. Same for potions.

For Zerg/Battlegroup play, everyone will be happy with you using your debuffs, especially disease, pet and AoE DoTs.
One more important function of the Cabalist is using Nearsight on the casters and healers that are hiding in the back or on walls.
Nearsight has the furthest range of any spell you have with 2300 range. When you are close enough to other enemies, I recommend AoE Disease spam. Both of these spells interrupt the enemy's casting for a few seconds, too. Very valuable.

For potions you should buy invigorating for endurance regeneration. This potion plus speccing Long Wind 1 allows you to permanently sprint.
Also Nereid potion for water breathing and swimming speed.
Those are enough for the beginning and very cheap. At some point you might want to get instant mana potions.
