/nameplate x doesn't match range

using /nameplate x i set the nameplate distance to 1500 but am able to hit with 1500 range debuff whilst name is not showing.
with /nameplate 2000 i can hit with a 1500 range debuff just inside the nameplate becoming visible.
seems to me {but maybe not} that either the range variable doesn't match the range in-game or the debuff range is pulling further than 1500 away
