Reaver Engage and armor debuff

Reaver's can successfully engage while running their Armor Absorption debuff chant. My understanding of engage was that it would break if you attacked your opponent. Is the armor absorption buff not considered attacking when it hits the enemy? In the screenshot you can see the enemy resisted the armor absorption debuff chant and I was still able to keep engage going. I was continually running the chant but no spell message was showing in the battle log but since you see the resist message you can tell it was running during engage.
